Gene has had a long time career with one of Grand Islands best-known companies, Bosselman Inc. He retired in 1999 as president of the Pump and Pantry division after serving in the post for more than 20 years.

He also had a long career in education. Graves taught and coached at Silver Creek from 1959 to 1963, taught at Omaha Central from 1963 to 1964, taught and coached at Northwest High School from 1966 to 1967 and was a counselor at Barr Junior High from 1967 to 1975.

He took a break from teaching from 1964 to 1966, when worked at leberle Laboratories. Graves graduated from Clarks High School in 1955 and from Midland College in Fremont in 1959 and received his Master's Degree from Kearney State College in 1969.
